About Us
Our Story
Hi, I’m Maritza Abreu - you can call me Mari! I’m the founder and CEO of Pisqueya, a food brand rooted in my Dominican heritage and my family’s Brooklyn restaurant, Puerto Viejo, the oldest Dominican restaurant in New York City.
Growing up on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, I spent countless hours at Puerto Viejo, watching my parents share the food of their homeland with our community. It was there that I learned food is so much more than flavor - it’s about family, culture, connection, and a sense of home.
Years later, I saw how underrepresented the flavors I grew up with were on store shelves. I knew our food and our stories deserved a place there, too. So I took a leap, left my corporate career, and turned generations of our family’s culinary traditions into Pisqueya - a line of bold sauces and seasonings inspired by the flavors of home.
Our Culinary Heritage
Pisqueya [pees-keh-yah] is a celebration of our Dominican roots and the vibrant flavors of Latin-Caribbean cuisine.
At the heart of Pisqueya is Puerto Viejo, where my parents built more than a restaurant. Over the years, it became a cultural institution for our Brooklyn community. When a devastating fire nearly took it all away, our neighbors rallied around our family. Their outpouring of love and support reminded us of something we had always known: food has the power to bring people together.
That same spirit of family, resilience, and togetherness lives on in every bottle of Pisqueya. We’re honoring where we come from while bringing the rich flavors of the Caribbean to more people, more kitchens, and more tables. By blending tradition with innovation, we're sharing our sabor with the world while creating space for Caribbean stories at every table.
